Visual Timetables

Visual timetable have become more common in settings now but they don’t tend to evolve as the year progresses.  When they are introduced to children, depending on their understand, they should only contain a few pictures or even a simple ‘now and then’ chart.

As the year progresses, more pictures can be added to it and the complexity increases.

Where possible, try to use pictures that match the task such as a photo or the type of snack a child will be eating.

Some settings take the pictures down after that part of the day is complete however I find it useful to leave them up so children can independently learn the sequence of the session.

You will find that this decreases the stress and anxiety levels of children as they begin to understand the routine of the day.
